The Parthenon Marbles: The Case for the Reunification, Christopher Hitchens, 2008

Controversial and well known author Christopher Hitchen's book is one of the most complete single tomes on the subject. It is thorough, well researched and cleverly argued, recounting the history of these precious sculptures and making the case for their return to Greece. It aims to draw out the artistic, moral, legal and political perspectives of the argument.

Don't miss the  latest edition of this book 'The Parthenon Marbles, the Case for Reunification'. This third edition  is dedicated to architect James Cubitt and opens with a new and powerful preface by Nobel Prize winner Nadine Gordimer. Christopher Hitchens has also added a thought-provoking introduction. The third edition was launched in May 2008, in London. This was organised by the BCRPM at Chatham House.

The Universal Museum: A valid model for the 21st century?, Tom Flynn, 2012

The concept of the Universal Museum is at the heart of current debates about cultural property. Art historian Dr Tom Flynn has written a brief history of the concept of the Universal Museum, tracing its roots back to the European Enlightenment. His essay questions the viability of these vast collections in an increasingly 'globalised' world. Many universal museums are struggling to respond to developing nations seeking to recover the material evidence of their past, much of which was appropriated during the imperial age. The case of the Parthenon Marbles is examined in detail.

Thinking about the Elgin Marbles, John Merryman, 2000

This book begins with a critical re-examination of the rival Greek and British claims to the Elgin Marbles. The case study identifies the questions that still dominate the growing international debate about cultural property policy and are explored in subsequent essays. The author examines in particular the law and policy relating to cultural property export controls and the evolution and development of the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on the Return of Stolen and Illegally Exported Cultural Property.

This book does not support the aims of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles. However, we feel it is important to provide a counter view.
