Mark Carney's elegant response to President Trump on May 7th.... "there are some places that are never for sale, we're sitting in one right now (the White House), Buckingham Palace" ..... Channel 4 News.
The Parthenon Marbles went on sale in 1816 without proper documentation. The sculptures exhibited in the British Museum had been removed by Lord Elgin's men when Greece had no voice.
The Parthenon still stands. The Acropolis Museum - Μουσείο Ακρόπολης will be celebrating its 16th anniversary next month.
Sir Keir Starmer, The Labour Party, time to do what you said in your election campaign, bring about change as you listen to our voices, please amend that Museum Act. Allow the long awaited reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, because you do have respect for Greece's only ask. Plus you did say you would not stand in the British Museum's way as negotiations for the future of these sculptures as they were underway. And yet the BM to stay within the laws of this nation cannot send them back..... except on a short three-year loan. A condition that is totally out of step with 21st century cultural co-operation, not least the strides made by so many nations including Scotland in returning artefacts to their countries of origin.
Greece had no voice in the 19th century and could not simply say to Lord Elgin, 'these sculptures are not for sale'. Today as a nation that has independence and a voice, let's show the world that we are listening and caring for Greece's wholly justified ask.
The voices of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles (BCRPM) would be grateful if this UK government would pay attention to detail and bring about the change that is needed.
